A 14k gold brooch with a large opal. Designed as a foliate oval disc centrally set with a vivid coloured opal cabochon (ca. 16 x 13,2 x 8,3 mm, ca. 7,68 ct). In the original, leather bound box marked "M. Hansen, Hofjuwelier Kiel". 4.8 x 3.8 cm. Weight 14.4 g.

The Hansen goldsmith company is today located in Hamburg but was founded in Kiel in 1814. Marten Heinrich Hansen (Nordstrand 1848 - Kiel 1919) was appointed court jeweller to the German emperor in 1888. He also created the prizes for the "Kieler Woche" regatta.
