A Meissen porcelain casserole with three friends pattern decor.

A Meissen porcelain casserole with three friends pattern decor. The form of the original lid based on the designs of Japanese double bowls. Blue crossed swords mark. A small rim chip to the lid. H 10.1, W 22.3 cm.
Ca. 1730 - 35.

This pattern, which originated in China and was interpreted in the Kakiemon style, depicts prunus, pine and bamboo plants. As these three shrubs are evergreen or flower in the snow, the design is known as the "three friends of winter". This decor is evident in Meissen pieces as of 1730. As with several other decor styles in the Japanese manner, the three friends was also first used in the order made by Count Hoym and the French merchant Rodolphe Lemaire.

Provenance
