Louis de Caullery hailed from Cambrai in France, but moved to Antwerp whilst he was quite young. There he became a pupil of Josse de Momper and joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1602. His works are influenced more by Sebastian Vrancx and Hieronymus Francken I than by Momper. He was primarily a painter of courtly genre scenes and allegories, with relgious subjects playing a lesser role in his oeuvre. However, he did create several very similar calvary scenes, the most famous of which is kept in the Museo del Prado and also depicts the crucifixion as a densely populated tableau (cf: M. Díaz-Padrón in: Boletín del Museo del Prado, vol. XIV 1993, p. 41 ff).
