Alessandro Varotari, called Il Padovanino, attributed to

Salome with the Head of John the Baptist (after Tizian)

Oil on canvas. 88.5 x 72 cm.

Alessandro Varotari, also known as “il Padovanino” after his hometown of Padua, moved to Venice in 1614 and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a successful painter and received considerable recognition for the narrative structures and sensuality of his works. Varotari's oeuvre also includes various copies of works by Titian. His pupils included Pietro Liberi and Giulio Carpioni, among others.
The composition of the present work remains close to Titian's original of around 1510, but the girl's features are reminiscent of Vorotari's style. This work was presumably made after one of the visits to Rome which he made shortly after 1610 and in 1625.
