Johann Boeckhorst - Lady with a Rose in her Hair
Lady with a Rose in her Hair
Oil on panel. 58 x 44.5 cm.
The painter Jan (Johann) Boeckhorst was active in Antwerp but had his roots in the region of Westphalia in Germany. He moved in the artistic circles of the great Baroque masters of the period - Rubens, Jordeans, Van Dyck. Their influence is clearly present in this work depicting an alluring young woman, primarily in the sensual and monumental manner in which the figure is presented, the pale colour palette and the swift, fluid brushwork. One of Boeckhorst's finest works is his "Five Foolish Virgins" kept in the Galerie Liechtenstein in Vienna, and more of his works can be viewed in Brussels and Antwerp.
