Cornelis Saftleven

Landscape with Jacob and Rachel

Oil on panel. 76 x 111 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre: Cornelis SaftLeven. fe 1634.

This panoramic landscape is dated 1634, making it an early work by this artist. It shows Jacob and Rachel tending the flocks of Rachel's father Laban in order to convince him to agree to their marriage (Genesis, 29:16 - 49:31). Saftleven places the old testament scene in a wide landscape, which can be identified as a Southern view by the inclusion of exotic animals and a mountainous background (for a similar composition by this artist, cf.: Sotheby´s, London, 13.12.2001, lot 144). Cornilis Saftleven's talent as a painter of animals is especially evident in his later landscapes and barn interiors, but also in the depiction of the goat and chicken on the lower right edge of the present work.
