Jan van Balen was the eldest son of the painter Hendrik van Balen. He was initially taught by his father before travelling to Italy and working in Ruben's studio between 1635 and 1639. He specialised in figures, and often painted the staffage for the allegorical or mythological landscapes of his fellow Flemings, for example Jan Brueghel II and Jan van Kessel.
