Vignali

Portrait of a Gonfaloniere

Oil on canvas. 127 x 95.5 cm (oval).

Prof. Sandro Bellesi attributed this portrait to Vignali in a publication in 2013, although at that point the whereabouts of the piece were unknown. A sketch for this work once attributed to Agostino Melissi is kept in the Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe in Rome. Comparison of the sketch and the painting reveals that although the background and the pose remained identical, the features of the figure in the sketch are more reminiscent of a young boy. Portraits of Gonfalonieri were very popular subject for Florentine painters and are typical representations of Tuscan history.
