Peeter Neeffs the Younger

The Interior of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk in Antwerp

Oil on canvas. 55 x 64.5 cm.
Signed and dated on the right pillar: Peeter Neeffs 1660.

The depictions of the Antwerp Cathedral by Peeter Neeffs affirm that it still held aesthetic appeal during the 17th century despite its architecture being that of the past. The church, dedicated to the Virgin, became a cathedral when the diocese of Antwerp was established. With six side aisles, a height of 123m and a length of 120m, as well as the important artworks it contained, the cathedral was the most important monument in Antwerp and a beloved motif in Flemish architectural painting.
