The attribution to Cerrini was first suggested by Prof. Mina Gregori and later confirmed by Prof. Alberto Cottino, who ascribes the work to the artist's early period. At this point, Cerrini was active in Bologna and still strongly influenced by Guido Reni and Michele Desubleo.
