Jacobus Biltius, attributed to

Trompe l'oiel Still Life with Birds

Oil on canvas (relined). 50.5 x 35.5 cm.

Jacob Biltius was active in The Hague, Amsterdam, Maastricht and Antwerp and almost exclusively painted still lifes, usually with dead fowl or hunting equipment. He often painted his works in trompe l'oeil manner, in which the items appear at first glance to have been hung on a nail before a whitewashed wall. The present work is a fine example of this style. Biltius' son and pupil Cornelis successfully continued in the tradition of his father.

We would like to thank Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for referencing Jacob Biltius.
