Quiringh van Brekelenkam

The Fishmonger

Oil on panel. 51 x 40 cm.
Monogrammed and dated lower right: QB 166.

This monogrammed work is characteristic of the Leiden painter Quiringh van Brekelenkam. He is thought to be a pupil of Gerrit Dou, although the glaze technique used by his teacher is seldom present in his works. His detailed depictions of workshops, kitchens and homes populated by jolly peasants and craftsmen all share the same unique and unmistakeable style. Brekelenkam's colour palette is dominated by the subdued brown, red and violet tones that befit his rustic interiors.
