Antonio Maria Marini, attributed to

The Miraculous Draught of Fishes

Oil on canvas. 136 x 168.5 cm.

Marini was born in Venice but probably spent most of his youth in Padua. He is recorded in Bologna as of 1693, before returning to Padua in 1700 and then moving to Venice in 1702 where he remained until his death in 1725. The painter's style is characterised by his bold, loose brushwork and his paintings - primarily showing landscapes, maritime and battle scenes - are frequently mistaken for those of Magnasco, Peruzzini, Marco Ricci or Salvator Rosa. Although he was influenced by these masters, his unique artistic personality is currently being rediscovered (cf. Maria Silvia Proni: Antonio Maria Marini. L'opera completa, Naples 1992).
