Antonio Visentini

Architectural Capriccio with Figures

Oil on canvas. 65 x 82.5 cm.

Visentini was a pupil of Gian Antonio Pellegrini and worked as a painter, engraver and architect, as well as teaching at the academy of Venice. Consul Joseph Smith was one of his patrons, and it was for him that Visentini remodelled the facade of the Palazzo Balbi in the Palladian style.
Today very few works can be attributed to this artist, although he is known to have worked together with Giambattista Tiepolo and Francesco Zuccarelli.
Prof. Pedrocco compares the present work to other capriccios in the Gallerie dell' Accademia and the Palazzo Contarini whose detailed architectural elements and figural staffage are reminiscent of style of Bibiena.
