Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler

The "Georg Delius" at Sea

Oil on canvas. 53 x 77 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: CJ Fedeler 1841.

In his later period, Fedeler exclusively painted ship portraits. The works were popular even during his lifetime among his patrons in Bremen and Bremerhaven, and the demand for these depictions of historical ships remains undamped among fans and admirers of German maritime history to this day. Fedeler's output of signed works increased greatly after the mid-1830s and his career appears to have ended around the year 1850. His son Carl (Justus) Fedeler (1837-1897) also primarily painted ships, but generally signed using his first name (C. Fedeler).
The present work shows the two-masted vessel “Georg Delius” flying the red and white flag of Bremen in choppy waters.
