The present painting is a fine example of Díaz de la Peña's oeuvre. It depicts a bare-footed woman before a wooded landscape which almost overwhelms the small figure. The luminous palette and sketchy brushwork are typical of the Barbizon school, to which Díaz was linked.
Influenced by eighteenth-century decorative landscapes, he renewed and modernized this style according to the new artistic ideals of mid 19th Century France. Díaz often peopled his landscapes with musicians, peasants, gypsies, and exotic figures.
