Eduard von Grützner

The Good Hand

Oil on panel (parquetted). 64 x 49 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: E. Grützner. 79..

Eduard von Grützner was already encouraged in his artistic efforts by the vicar of his home town when he was a child. Later he travelled to Munich and visited a private school where he was taught drawing by Hermann Dyck. He then studied under Hermann Anschütz at the Munich Academy and became a pupil of the narrative painter Karl Theodor von Piloty in 1867 before opening his own studio two years later. He became a professor at the Academy in Munich in 1886.
His genre scenes are characterised by an anecdotal, humourous tone, similar to those of his friend and companion Carl Spitzweg. He frequently painted interior scenes, and the present example fits seamlessly into his oeuvre.
