Guglielmo Ciardi

Maritime Scene

Oil on canvas. 80.5 x 131 cm.
Signed and dated to the reverse: G.o CIARDI 98.

Guglielmo Ciardi can be considered the 19th Century Venetian veduta painter par excellence. After studying at the Venice Academy, the artist travelled through Italy and met artists such as Signorini, Nino Costa and Filippo Palizzi: These various influences resulted in his typical combination of naturalism and luministic effects. Ciardi was mainly interested in the rendering of light and the atmosphere of the lagoon, and Venice becomes a background to his representations.
Luigi Menegazzi describes the present work as one of the best exemples of this artist's oeuvre during the 1890s, when he contiunued his research into atmospheric effects, rendering the shimmering reflections and the extraordinary stillness of the lagoon in scenes where sky and water seem to melt together.
On the reverse below the signature inscribed in black: "Panello No. 16 sinistro/Sala della Pesca".
