Endras Maurus

A limewood pieta group carved by Endras Maurus.

The sides attached separately, the reverse flattened. No visible traces of polychromy.. The Virgin is shown with Her head lowered to gaze mournfully at the body of Christ which lays before Her with His torso elevated and His legs lain out on the ground before His Mother. This fine quality pietà displays strong stylistic similarities to the works of Endras Maurus, an artist who was taught in Augsburg and was active in Kempten and Allgäu, for example his enthroned Saint Catherine in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich. Endras Maurus' oeuvre was first examined by Albrecht Miller in 1998 (op. cit.), and he attributes this work to the artist in a letter from 14.11.2008.
With minimal wear and insect damage. 39.5 x 42 x 13.5 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, South Germany. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
