Bavaria 1549

A small Bavarian carved wood travel altar, 1549.

Some polychromy original, the older polychromy partially overpainted. When opened, the shrine depicts Saint Francis receiving the stigmata to the centre, flanked by relief panels with Saint Anthony and Saint Andrew accompanied by a small donor figure of a Franciscan monk. The relief of Christ carrying the cross in the predella niche is bordered by two small wings showing Saint Vitus and Saint Helen, which bear the coat-of-arms of the Langenmantel patrician family (to the left) and probably the Brennberg branch of this family from the Regensburg area (to the right) to the outer panels. The work is dated "1549" to the predella.
With minimal wear. 52 x 46 x 7.5 cm (when opened).
