Philipp Jakob Straub, attributed to

A carved limewood figure of Saint Sebastian attributed to Philipp Jakob Straub.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. The right leg bound with twine. With the original polychromy and gilding.. The dramatic effect of this depiction of Saint Sebastian's martyrdom is primarily achieved through the contrast between the saint's pale, writhing body and the thick, naturalistically rendered tree stump to which he is bound. The piece was most likely carved by the Graz based sculptor Philipp Jakob Straub, as it shows strong similarities to his Saint Sebastian in the 1746 high altar of the Welsche Kirche in Graz.
With minimal wear. A narrow crack to the reverse of the saint's body. The arrows lost. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 90 cm (without the plinth).

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
