Probably Cologne circa 1820

An oak figure of the Virgin enthroned, probably carved in Cologne circa 1820.

Carved in the round, the reverse of the throne flattened. With the original polychromy and gilding.. The wood has been dendrochronologically examined and found to have been felled around 1760. This work represents a rare example of 14th century international Gothic forms being revived during the Romantic era and subsequently ammended to suit the Neogothic tastes of around 1900, thus documenting changing tastes within the 19th century. This combination of the enthroned Virgin and the pedestal with lions is an invention of the artist, lacking in historical predecessors.
The Virgin's bonnet replaced with a carved limewood veil and crown around 1900. With minimal wear. 90 x 36 x 28.5 cm.

Provenance

According to tradition the work originates from Lauvenburg in Nemmenich near Zülpich (Eifel), and was in possession of various vicarages as of 1951. - Lempertz auction 920, Cologne 17.05.2008, lot 1219. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
