Probably Maasland late 15th century

A late 15th century probably Meuse Region carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child.

Carved in the round, with older polychromy.. The crowned Virgin is depicted standing on a round, earth mound base. She holds the nude Christ Child over her hip with her left hand. Her gaze is lowered and her face turned slightly towards the right whilst the Child faces the opposite direction with His hand raised in blessing. The parallel folds of the Virgin's red, girded gown form an interesting contrast to the V-shaped folds of the floor-length blue cloak she holds drawn about her body.
The Madonna's right hand and the left hand, fingers and toes of the Child lost. Wear with losses to the crown and plinth. Height 79 cm.

Provenance
