Karl Peter Röhl - Sitzende mit verschränkten Armen
Karl Peter Röhl
Sitzende mit verschränkten Armen
Oil on canvas 97.5 x 66.5 cm Framed. Monogrammed and dated 'R 14' lower left and signed, dated and inscribed 'Karl Peter Röhl 1914 Weimar' in black brush verso on canvas. - The canvas turned, verso with white overpainted abstract composition shining through. Few retouches.
The canvas of the present painting was turned twice. While the motif on the recto, possibly the depiction of a female fellow pupil at the Bauhaus, originates from 1914, the depiction on the verso is from 1919 and is, according to Michael Siebenbrodt, so far the only known abstract composition from this year. Accordingly, the side featuring the portrait of the young lady became the reverse side making space for the abstract composition in 1919, to then later return to recto again. This probably happened around 1928 when Röhl overpainted many compositions in white and in this case also gave it a signature, dating of the respective earlier year and statement of place.
