Christian Rohlfs

Physalis
1919

Water tempera on thick, grained laid paper 66.3 x x 48.7 cm Framed under glass. Monogrammed and dated 'CR 19' lower right. - Two backed, short tears in the lower left margin.

“Friends had repeatedly brought the painter, who did not marry until 1919, flowers and plants when they visited him, in order to add a little colour and beauty to his solitary life. These friends also included his future wife, and after their wedding she continued to fill his studio with flowers, which he always painted. Works of this kind mark the beginning of his late work, which brought him international reknown and evolved to a high level of perfection in Switzerland after 1928.” (Paul Vogt expertise)
The image makes a graphic and forceful impression through the striking lines laid down in a luminous blue. In terms of botany the blossoms depicted here may also bear similarities to the slipperwort - the artist repeatedly enjoyed depicting both plants in those years.
