8 million people gathered in Berlin during the tenth 'Weltfestspiele der Jugend und Studenten' [youth and student world festival] in 1973. The new head of state and party chairman of the time Erich Honecker wanted to present the FDR as “cosmopolitan” and organised several rock concerts. The world festival was being celebrated as the “Woodstock of the East”. Barbara Klemm, who was among the FDR journalists who had travelled to this festival, documented the festival's official part here.
