Liam Gillick

Resolution Platform
2001

Aluminium and plexiglass. 200 x 200 x 5 cm. Signed, dated and titled (hammered) 'LIAM GILLICK 2001 RESOLUTION PLATFORM'' on the aluminium.

In his works, the British object and installation artist, critic, curator and literary Liam Gillick analyses particular places, their social conditions and the possibilites which arise from the defined space. ''With the platforms and partitions, Gillick continues his architectural discourse. These are usually colourful, rectangular surfaces, divided and finished by aluminium strips. This also includes […] plattforms which Gillick designs as spatial interventions and offers as an 'enclosed zone to reflect on interaction, transfer of information and strategy' (Gillick) in the showroom. Their formal and materially reduced appearance is reminiscent of minimalist works of the 1960s; Gillick describes his interest in these spatial interventions however with conceptual considerations. The question of the possibilties of art in relation to non-artistic reality are central to the work. He deals with politics in aesthetic, formal and fictional categories thus emphasising not only the constructed nature of existing discourses, but also the possibilites of alternative ways of thinking.''
