Anton Castell

A View of Dresden

Oil on canvas, mounted on panel. 27.8 x 46 cm.
Monogrammed and dated lower left: AC 1854.

The life and work of the painter Anton Castell were both intrinsically linked to the city of Dresden. It was where he was born and educated, and majority of his works were painted there and show the town or its surrounding landscape. Following his studies at the Academy, Castell was strongly influenced by the Romantic atmosphere in the works of Christian Clausen Dahl (1788-1857), a Norwegian artist active in Dresden. Like Dahl, Castell also preferred to depict evening light, sunsets and moonlit scenes. In the present, atmospheric work, the artist depicts the city as seen from the left bank of the Elbe.
