Like his father Jan Jozef Horemans I, Jan Jozef the younger was also a skilled chronist of middle-class life in 18th century Flanders. Alongside scenes of merry company and peasant homes, the repertoires of both artists also included various workshop and studio interiors. The elegant lady in a blue and white dress not only features in this scene of a shoemaker's shop, but is also shown in the same pose in works showing a chemist's (auctioned by Sotheby's, London, 14.12.2000, lot 376) and a money-changer's shop (auctioned by Koller, Zurich, 17.9.2014, lot 6483).
