Portrait of a Gentleman

Oil on canvas (relined). 62.5 x 51 cm.

Partial copy of a full-figure portrait by Anthony van Dyck, kept in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Friedrich Bury frequently copied the works of the old masters, and these works were highly popular among collectors. Goethe comissioned his friend Bury to create copies of Giuliano Romano's frescoes at the Palazzo del Te in Mantua, whilst the Prussian Queen Louise ordered a copy of Raphael's Sixtine Madonna to give as a present to her husband.
