Estimate: 1.500 € - 2.000 €

A large, green lacquered faience vase

Decorated with buildings and figures in a river landscape. The glazed base with a blue coin mark. A restored breakage to the neck, minor losses to the lacquer. H 51 cm.
Attributed to Berlin, ca. 1830/40.

The origin and date of these vases long remained a mystery. Otto v. Falke tentatively dated the "barbaric overpainting" (Altberliner Fayence, Berlin 1923, p. 39) to after 1790. The two vases which he mentions are those formerly housed in Berlin Palace (black with mother-of-pearl inlays, H 100 cm) and in Sanssouci (one gu-form, green with polychrome lacquer decor, H 88 cm). Samuel Wittwer reliably dates the pieces to after 1840 in his essay "Berliner Lackvasen" (cat. Schwartz Porcelain, Münster 2004, p. 237 ff).

Provenance

The late Dr. Erwin Lukas collection.
