Paul Friedrich Meyerheim was born into a famous family of artists in Berlin. He was particularly talented at painting animals, an interest he shared with his friend Adolf Menzel. He led the animal painting class at the Berlin art academy as of 1883, where his pupils included the sculptor August Gaul. Meyerheim's principal works include the frescoes in the vestibule of Berlin Zoological Garden's Antilope House.
