A Berlin KPM porcelain plate with a view of Northeim

Pompadour-form. The openwork border picked out in gilt and green, the centre bearing a depiction of the city of Northeim (inscribed to the reverse), recognisable by the brewery tower. Blue sceptre mark, red imperial orb mark, gold painter's mark K, year letter D for 1904, signed to the lower edge of the depiction "Jul.Menzel". Diameter 23.8 cm.
Berlin, glost firing 1904. Decorated by Julius Menzel before 1905.

These three pieces belong to a series of topographical plates which were given as a wedding present to the crown princely couple William of Prussia and Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin by the smaller Prussian cities on 6th June 1905. The Pompadour form plate, based on a Meissen model, was highly popular with the Imperial family. In Haus Doorn several extensive series of plates painted with views of Imperial castles and yachts have survived, also painted by Julius Menzel.
