A Berlin KPM porcelain plate from the mythological histories service

Decorated to the border with gilt mosaic and floral festoons, the centre painted with a depiction of the nymph Arethusa fleeing from the river god Alpheus. Blue sceptre mark, impressed 13. Minor wear to the gilt edging. Diameter 25 cm.
1783.

Most of the motifs used to decorate this service were taken from Pierre Basan's series of copperplate engravings "Les Métamorposes d'Ovide", which has been preserved in the Berlin KPM archives. This depiction of the nymph Arethusa is one such piece.
