A large Berlin KPM porcelain platter made for Count Rothenburg

Gilt relief decor interspersed with red scale pattern. Painted to the border and centre with native birds. The reverse with insects over minor firing faults. Blue sceptre mark, impressed 3 and III. Two retouched rim chips. Diameter 34 cm.

Many of the details concerning the history of the Rothenburg service are unknown. Parallels in the design and the characteristic red scale pattern decor indicate that it could have been made simultaneously to the "Rote Tafelservice" in 1769. It was only discovered that the recipient of the service was a member of the comital Rothenburg family when 156 pieces from this service were sold in 1913 by Rudolph Lepke in Berlin as a consignment of a certain "Graf R.". The initial was that of Count Rothenburg of Polish Nettkow. A large selection of pieces from this service later landed in the collection of the antiques dealer Hans Weinberg in New York, and they were auctioned along with the rest of his estate by Christie's in London in 1977.
