A Berlin KPM porcelain plate made for the Stadtschloss in Breslau

With blue scale pattern decor to the border and a large poppy flower to the centre. Blue sceptre mark, impressed + K3. Wear to the outer edge. Diameter 27.5 cm.
1767/68.

Alongside Potsdam and Berlin, Frederick II also appointed Breslau (Wroclaw) as a residential city in 1747. He purchased the castle belonging to Baron von Spätgen in 1751 and had it remodelled according to his requirements. It was the first residential palace to be furnished with a dinner service in the new "antikzierat" porcelain design. Particularly characteristic for the decor of this early style are the "deutsche blumen", depicted in full bloom or sometimes already beginning to wilt. At a price of 7,040 thaler, this 36 piece service was the most expensive of those which Frederick had made. The present piece is among the plates described with "144 Speise-Teller(n) große Sorte à 6 Rtlr.".

Provenance

West German private collection.
