Finnish peasant woman

Blue mark, unidentified stamp to the basal ring. H 17.6 cm.
Popov Factory in Gorbunovo, after 1811 - 1860.

This figure is based on a copperplate engraving entitled "Ein Finnisches Bauren-Weib" (a Finnish peasant woman) from Johann Gottlieb Georgi's book "Beschreibung aller Nationen des Russischen Reichs, ihrer Lebensart, Religion, Gebräuche, Wohnungen, Kleidung und übrigen Merckwürdigkeiten" (a description of all nations of the Russian empire, their ways of life, religion, traditions, housing, clothing and other peculiarities) which was published in Frankfurt/Leipzig in 1777 and in St. Petersburg in 1799. The first sculptor to realise such figures for the imperial porcelain manufactory was Jean-Dominique Rachette (Montpellier 1744 - 1809 St. Petersburg).
