A small baroque bone-inlaid walnut cabinet

With three drawers below two doors beneath a breakfront cornice. Decorated to the front with carved vine scrolls and dated "1683". H 34.5, W 33, D 11.5 cm.
South German (possibly Nuremberg) or Switzerland, 1683.

Small-scale or miniature furniture has always been popular, but its exact function is often unclear. Some pieces were certainly used by travelling merchants as models or demonstration pieces for full-sized furniture. However, some are also known to have been made purely for recreational reasons as a way to pass the time.
