Two silver seals belonging to Duke Christian August of Saxony-Zeitz

One with an iron handle. Diameter 7.3 and 6.3 cm.
Unmarked, ca. 1700.

Duke Christian August of Saxony-Zeitz (1666-1725) was the uncle of August the Strong. He was largely responsible for his conversion to Catholicism in 1697, which was the prerequisite for his election as King of Poland. Christian August played a significant role in contemporary church politics, as he was first canon and later cathedral provost of Cologne. Both of these seals were used in his functions as bishop of Györ/Raab (as of 1696), cardinal/archbishop of Esztergom/Gran and primas of Hungary (1707).
