A carved fruitwood directoire vase

An exceptional vase with a gadrooned trumpet-form neck above shoulders entwined by a snake amid oak branches and an acanthus clasped base. Minor losses from earlier insect damage. H 42.5 cm.
Attributed to Aubert-Henri-Joseph Parent, late 18th C.

Aubert-Henri-Joseph Parent (1753 - 1835), to whom this vase is attributed, was known for his fantastic carvings in Louis XVI's palace of Versailles, and was already inundated with further commissions in the 1770s. In 1784 he took a sojourn to Italy to study the ruins of antiquity. This vase was presumably made upon his return, as it already displays influence of contemporary Roman art.
