Inscribed in old handwriting to the back of the canvas: "Veduta del Ponte di Rialto verso [indistinct] di Venezia".

This view of Venice shows the Rialto bridge over the Grand Canal seen from the north. It is based on a piece by Canaletto, the most important veduta painter of the 18th century. He depicted similar views in two paintings in the Royal Collection in Windsor and the collection of Duke Richmond in Goodwood as well as in a drawing in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (cf. André Corboz: Canaletto. Una Venezia immaginaria, vol. 2, Milan 1985, vol. 2, p. 88, p. 76 and pl. 15).
