Cornelis Massys, attributed to

River Landscape with the Baptism of Christ and Saint John Preaching

Oil on panel (parquetted). 31 x 43 cm.

This panoramic landscape combines two central events from the life of Saint John: His baptism of Christ in the river Jordan and the sermon in the desert. The composition is this "world landscape", espeically the background, is typical of the southern Netherlands and highly comparable to the works of Cornelis Massys, for example his "Landscape with Saint Jerome" (Koninklijk Museum voor Schoone Kunsten, Antwerp, inv. no. 830) or "Landscape with the Return of the Prodigal Son" (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no. SK-A-1286).
