Hendrick van Cleve III, circle of

King Nimrod before the Tower of Babel

Oil on panel (with the panel mark of Michel Claessens). 42.5 x 66.3 cm.

The old testament story of the tower of Babel (Gen. 11,1-9) occurs after the great flood and before Abraham's journey to Haran. It completes a series of tales relating to the hubris of man. The tower of Babel motif was highly popular in Netherlandish art. It was painted by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Lucas van Valckenburgh, and particularly frequently by Marten van Cleve, to whose works the present image bears the closest resemblance.
