Hendrick Avercamp, follower of

Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters

Oil on panel (parquetted). 22.5 x 27.8 cm.

Clara Welcker lists this work as an authentic Hendrick Avercamp in her monograph and catalogue raisonné of the artist and his nephew Barent Avercamp. The book was published in 1933, revised edited in 1979, and formed the basis of research into both artists' works. Today, the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) in The Hague considers the painting to be the work of a 17th century follower of Hendrick Avercamp, based on an authentic version kept in the Musée Baron-Martin in Gray (MNR 550).
Hendrick Avercamp was one of the most important early proponents of the winter landscape. He successfully conveys the frosty atmosphere of a landscape trapped under a blanket of ice and snow, but combines this with a plethora of colourful figures shown engaged in winter pursuits like playing kolf or going about their day-to-day work.
