Joost Cornelisz Droochslot was born in Utrecht and died there in 1666. Although he is not known to have visited Italy, many of his highly popular village scenes include classical architecture and ruins. His often densely populated vedutas frequently contain allegorical references such as good Samaritans or scenes of alms givers. For example, in this image we see an opulently clothed young man addressing a group of beggars.
