Anthony Jansz van der Croos

River Landscape with Fishermen

Oil on canvas (relined). 69 x 81 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: JAV Croos. F. 1661 (JAV monogrammed).

This landscape is dated 1661, and was therefore painted just one year prior to the artist's death in the Hague. The work depicts a group of fishermen at work by a river. Van der Croos has stacked the various elements of the composition - the figures, trees, rolling hills and architecture - to form a rhythmic pattern, leading the observer through the image towards the little town with its church spire in the distance. Anthony van der Croos was among the generation of Dutch landscape painters who were most strongly influenced by the new way of depicting nature propagated by Jan van Goyen's circle.
