Jan Wijnants

Landscape with Rolling Hills and a Stag Hunt

Oil on canvas (relined). 68 x 81 cm.

With a hand-written label to the reverse on the stretcher reading: “Joh. Wijnants. Die Figuren sollen von einem anderen niederländischen Meister sein / Georg Weber“. Based on the information provided in the Lepke auction catalogue, both Hofstede de Groot and Eisele propose the work's provenance to include ownership by the Hamburg collector E. F. Weber. However, the label refers to a Georg Weber.
The lively hunting party, consisting of several riders and a pack of dogs, blends harmonically into a rural background displaying all the characteristics typical of the Haarlem artist Jan Wijnants. It is a sparsely wooded landscape allowing for an occasional glimpse out onto a far horizon marked by a range of hills of a southern appearance. The artist has given particular attention to the foreground, with its magnified and detailed depiction of the earth and plants upon it.
