The elegance of this unknown young lady, expressed by the graceful gesture of her hand and the suggestion of soft skin, indicates the authorship of a French artist. The painter may have belonged to the circle of Pierre Mignard, who was the leading portraitist in France before Hyazinthe Rigaud. The floral arrangement in a woven basket is reminiscent of the works of Nicolas Baudesson (1611-1680), who was born one year before Mignard in Troyes.
The present work is housed in a white painted frame of the mid-18th century, finely carved with floral swags, rocailles and a crowning cartouche.
