C. Nordhoff und H. Reimer date this painting to between 1801 and 1806, which would make it a late work of Jakob Philipp Hackert, who died in 1807. The artist himself was of the opinion that his artistic talent had increased with age. Following Hackert's death, the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who had been a friend of his since 1786, composed a short biographical sketch of the painter, who was already highly celebrated throughout his lifetime.
