Anton Raphael Mengs

A Portrait of the Artist's Father

Black chalk on blue tinted paper. 51 x 41 cm (the upper corners rounded).
Probably inscribed by the artist to the reverse: Portrait von Ismael Mengs gez. von seinem Sohn R Mengs.

This drawing shows the same portrait of the artist's father, and most important teacher, which he drew twice in this size in pastels. One of these pieces is owned by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, the second is kept in a private collection. Steffi Roettgen dates the pastel to circa 1744/45 (S. Roettgen: Anton Raphael Mengs. 1728-1779. vol. I. Das malerische und zeichnerische Werk, 1999, p. 291-2, no. 223. - S. Roettgen: Mengs. Die Erfindung des Klassizismus, 2001, p. 14 a-b.).
